When the National Gallery in Christiania was established in 1837, it was as a collection of European Old Masters. During the 19th century the institution changed, and emphasis was put on Norwegian artists. For a long period of time, the Old Master paintings were dormant. This has now changed however, as Cynthia Osiecki was appointed curator of old masters at the National Museum in 2017.
Osiecki is an art historian with master degrees from the universities of Nijmegen and Amsterdam. She is working on her PhD titled ‘Jacob Binck (c. 1500-1569). Ordering Art for Dukes and Kings in the Baltic Sea Region’. She previously held the Andrew W. Mellon fellowship at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
